MotoGP world champion Jorge Martin is recovering in hospital with 11 broken ribs and a collapsed lung after a crash described by the man who smashed into him as 'the worst scene of my life'.
The Spaniard was racing in the Qatar Grand Prix when he lost control of his bike and began to fall to ground withFabio Di Giannantonio right on his tail.Di Giannantonio was unable to avoid Martin andhis front wheel hit the world champion on the back.
Martin then slid several metres across the asphalt before reeling on all fours, obviously in excruciating pain, until medics arrived at the Lusail track.
The shocking scene played out in front of his horrified girlfriend,Maria Monfort Matutes who was watching in the paddock.
And, as her partner was treated, the true extent of his injuries became clear. The damage was so bad thata drain had to be inserted into Martin to remove the air and relieve pressure on his lungs.
The positive side for Martin is that brain, cervical spine, or abdominal organ damage has been ruled out and the 27-year-old was at least able to post a few reassuring words to his fans.

'I thank God because what happened to me could have been much worse. I'll try to keep you informed,' he posted on Instagram.
It's not the first time Martin's supporters and girlfriend Maria have been put through the ringer by his injuries.
The double world champion was injured twice in pre-season. Both times, he suffered serious injuries with a host of bone fractures.
And, it was on his comeback from that, he suffered Sunday's crash withDi Giannantonio.
'He was right in front of me for a while, I was pretty close to him and, of course, tried to overtake him,' said a shaken Di Giannantonio.
'The moment he fell, his body was completely in front of my bike. And then, well, at over 200 km/h (125mph), more or less. It's just a very fast corner.
'I had no chance to avoid him; so I touched him. I was thinking about him the whole time because I was very worried.

Martin will remain in the hospital for a few days for observation and it is unclear when he will return to action.
