Coppell Visitors Guide - Dallas Fort Worth Guide (2024)

Coppell is a fast-growing, upscale city that boasts safe streets and neighborhoods, a pro-business environment and excellent public schools. The city is home to more than 30,000 residents and continues to experience rapid growth thanks to its central location just outside the Dallas/Ft. Worth metro area.

Coppell is just five miles north of Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, the world’s second-busiest airport, and offers easy access through a network of highway systems. Due, in part, to those factors, Coppell has become home to more than two dozen new corporations over the past several years.

Coppell is just a few miles from Grapevine and North Lakes, providing residents with plenty of recreational opportunities. Locals enjoy a close-knit community with a wide variety of community events held each year. In addition to the traditional annual holiday-based events, special programs such as the Fall Family Fish event allow families to come together.

Coppell has become a prime location to live, work and play and the real estate market offers something for everyone.

One of the big draws in Coppell is the public school systems that have been rated “exemplary” by the Texas Education Agency. Two districts – the Coppell Independent School District (CISD) and the Carrollton Farmers Branch Independent School District — serve students in the city. Both offer a diversified curriculum including bilingual education, gifted education, fine arts, special education and more.

Numerous colleges and universities in the area provide higher education opportunities. More than a dozen community colleges are in the area. The University of Texas has two campuses in the area. Private colleges include Baylor University, Southern Methodist University, and Texas Christian University.

There are a variety of recreational opportunities in and around Coppell. Grapevine Lake, the fourth busiest lake in Texas, is located just west of the city. The lake features 146 miles of shoreline and has become the premier windsurfing, sailing and fishing area. The 7,380-acre area includes an extensive park system with public tennis courts, baseball and softball diamonds, football and soccer fields, jogging and biking trails, a swimming pool, playgrounds, and picnic facilities.

North Dallas County is also a golf Mecca with three public golf courses, including one designed by golfing legend Byron Nelson. Coppell parks offer more than 116 acres of outdoor excitement. Andrew Brown West Park has 52 acres with jogging/walking trails, a playground, picnic shelters, baseball fields, basketball courts and a pond with a fishing dock. The city’s Senior Center offers a variety of activities and programs for the elderly.

The history of Coppell dates back to the late 1800s. In 1873, the community was first known as “Gibbs,” in honor of the former Texas Senator and Lieutenant Governor Barnett Gibbs. In 1890, the community changed its name to “Coppell,” in honor of George Coppell, the engineer credited with bringing the railroad to the city. Transportation has always played a key role in the emergence of the city. The Cotton Belt Railroad was the major form of transportation into the community until the 1920s, when automobiles and paved roads became more prevalent. In 1955, the City of Coppell was incorporated. Since 1974, when the Dallas Forth Worth International Airport was opened, the city of Coppell has experienced tremendous growth and continues to grow at a steady pace.
